A Sticky Situation

May 15, 2007: “Viscoelastic morphing polymer base,“ excuse me? If you’re wondering what that means you’re not alone, so you are excused. It is the active ingredient of MonsterPod one of the newest photo accessories currently on the market.

MonsterPod is a camera stabilization device that was designed for those moments where you wish you had a tripod but didn’t want to lug one around. So instead of asking a pedestrian to take your photo, leaning against a fence post or passing up a photo-op, MonsterPod will stick to just about any surface you can find and instantly gives you tripod-like stability. The makers of MonsterPod claim it has stuck to, “1000 objects and counting.”

The patented Viscoelastic morphing polymer base is the secret to its success. You can press the orange Silly Putty like substance to just about anything. It will conform to the shape of the surface you are sticking it to and create a temporary bond. MonsterPod will hold a compact digital camera that weighs less than 20 oz. for up to 10 minutes (not recommended for DSLRs) depending on the angle of the surface you are sticking it to. Imagine all those times that you wanted to take a picture and could have used a tripod you did not have; like when you want to be in the shot but can’t, or you needed a slow shutter speed because it was twilight or dark out.

MonsterPod can surely be used in hundreds if not thousands of places from sticking it to a snowboard to sticking it to a wall, as you can see on their website www.omegasatter.com the possibilities are just about endless. Stick it to anything and then pull it off without leaving a trace. The MonsterPod is small enough to keep in a camera bag but so versatile that it turns all of your surroundings into surface stable enough to hold your digital camera. After fastening your digital camera to the standard sized tripod mount you are ready to go. MonsterPod retails for $34.99 and is available at photo-specialty stores nationwide.

MonsterPod is distributed by OmegaSatter, based outside of Baltimore, MD.
