(Ed. note: Panoramic camera pioneer and former
Popular Photography columnist Simon Nathan is credited with coining
the term Hulcherama to describe the craze behind Charles
A. Hulchers specially built panoramic cameras. He is author
of the popular-selling1956 Fawcett Books Camera in Paris,
and is also heralded for carrying three different panoramic cameras
to the South Pole in 1962. On the anniversary of 9/11, Simon chronicles
the irony and frustrations of NYT photographer and protégéFred
Conradin his quest to document the Ground Zero recovery effort
with a rented panoramic camera.)
New York Times staff photographer Fred R. Conrad
has more panoramic experience than any photographer on staff. Unfortunately,
this article is neither about Conrads experience with his
Plymouth-racing green Hulcherama in the 1970s, nor his use
of a Fuji G617. These arent company-issued cameras, but he
carries them to satisfy his own curiosity and creativity.
While Conrad had never heard of the panoramic
list (www.panorama-l@sci.monash.edu.au) which was alerting the Internet
community to a panoramic rendition of Ground Zero, it did note that
it was made with a Roundshot camera. Unfortunately, there was no
mention of the photographer at all. Conrad had been to Ground Zero
about four times before making the photo. While he wasnt much
for talking about himself, the panoramic list did get everyone excited
about this Roundshot.
