Love at first sight. Some people say they have never encountered it, which is difficult for me to imagine, as such a feeling seems only natural for visual people like photographers. Anyway, that is what I felt the first time I met Denis Brihat, many, many years ago.

I first saw him in a school of photography in Marseille, France. Brihat was explaining something to a student in his overwhelmingly jovial manner. I did not know him, but his theatrical manner prompted my immediate attention. When I discovered his personal work, I knew I had never seen anything like it. Brihat’s photographs were sharp, fresh, beautiful and powerful. I can now say that his images were more American than French, because his style was inspired by Edward Weston. This emphasis on absolute fine art inspired me greatly in the early stages of my photography. Although our subjects differed, I owe to Brihat the fine art aspect of my photojournalistic work, particularly my emphasis on tones.
